An evening with Keith Brymer Jones

I went to the most amazing evening hosted by the lovely North Light in Huddersfield last night listening to Keith Brymer Jones and his lovely Mrs, Marj talking all things clay and The Great Pottery Throw Down.

I’d already listened to his book “Boy in a China Shop” when it first came out so it was so nice to get a physical copy and for the man himself to sign it.

I gave him one of my little owls to keep in his pocket for when he’s feeling stressed.

So much of what he was saying resonated, and I can’t wait to hear more about his work to get more creativity into schools and bringing manufacturing back to the UK.

The process of creating really helps us understand who we are as people and gives us a voice to say things we can’t always articulate or even feel we’re not allowed to express ourselves. Something I’ve been thinking a lot about recently.

For a long time due to personal stuff I’d made myself small, kept my voice quiet, felt like who I am and what I believed in was wrong. Creating physical sculpture is helping me take up space and giving me a platform to use my voice. Clay did this.

As Keith said last night

“The moment I touched that clay I knew it would be with me for the rest of my life”

Thank you so much for sharing the love of clay and creativity Keith, you’re a legend.
