Limited edition fine art prints of paintings and drawings of our wonderful British wildlife. Most of my drawings and paintings are what I would call, “head studies,” because I always focus on the eyes – the light, life and expression within any living being shines through them and we connect immediately with the subject.
The Painting Process
All of my paintings begin with an encounter with wildlife.
As a former professional photographer, it’s so vitally important for me to get my own reference photos to work from – to capture that moment – the feel, the movement, the light, the very essence of each creature and how they make me feel.
My work is digitally drawn – there’s often the misconception that the photo is simply converted at a click of a button to create an arty effect. This isn’t how I work.
My paintbrush is a pen, my paper is a tablet. My paint palette is on my screen so I have no need to wash my brush or sharpen my pencil. These are the main differences. The process is the same as it would be using physical painting and drawing tools.
Using my own reference photos, the first thing I do is paint the eyes. With a tablet I’m able to zoom in closely to make sure I’m happy, before I block in the rest of the colours. From here I will add texture, details, more light and shade, tints and hues of the many colours that we see in our wonderful wildlife.
