We’re on a road to where?

You may or may not remember the Talking Heads song “Road to Nowhere,” but this song has been rolling around in my head, and looking up the lyrics I can see why! Let me explain…

After tying myself in knots over the practicalities of websites, shops, costings, postage, blah blah blah in April, I decided to take the pressure off myself and spend May CREATING. After all, that’s what I’m on this journey to do. As usual, I was trying to get ahead of myself.

Last year, before the whole covid thing kicked off, I had a reading with Jonathan Halstead at Holistic Wellbeing. Spirit knew I was excited about something, and being on the right path but not knowing where I was going, and as usual they were non-comital about the destination. Recently something made me wonder about me becoming an artist – whether that’s what I’m meant to be doing – the self-doubts creep in and I started second-guessing myself.

Then I realised. I’m not meant to know the destination. I’m one of those people who if they know where they need to be, will focus only on that in order to achieve it.

The destination is now, this very moment. I have nowhere to go except here. If I focussed on a destination I would miss all the wonderful twists and turns along the way. That IS what living is all about after all.

“Living is a form of not being sure, not knowing what next or how. The moment you know how, you begin to die a little. The artist never entirely knows. We guess. We may be wrong, but we take leap after leap in the dark.”

Agnes De Mille

Caution Ducks

We’re on a road to nowhere

Well, we know where we’re goin’
But we don’t know where we’ve been
And we know what we’re knowin’
But we can’t say what we’ve seen

And we’re not little children
And we know what we want
And the future is certain
Give us time to work it out

We’re on a road to nowhere
Come on inside
Takin’ that ride to nowhere
We’ll take that ride

I’m feelin’ okay this mornin’
And you know
We’re on a road to paradise
Here we go, here we go

We’re on a ride to nowhere
Come on inside
Takin’ that ride to nowhere
We’ll take that ride

Maybe you wonder where you are
I don’t care
Here is where time is on our side
Take you there, take you there

We’re on a road to nowhere
We’re on a road to nowhere
We’re on a road to nowhere

There’s a city in my mind
Come along and take that ride
And it’s all right, baby it’s all right

And it’s very far away
But it’s growing day by day
And it’s all right, baby it’s all right

Would you like to come along?
And you could help me sing this song
And it’s all right, baby it’s all right

They can tell you what to do
But they’ll make a fool of you
And it’s all right, baby it’s all right

There’s a city in my mind
Come along and take that ride
And it’s all right, baby it’s all right

And it’s very far away
But it’s growing day by day
And it’s all right, baby it’s all right

Would you like to come along?
You could help me sing this song
And it’s all right, baby it’s all right

They can tell you what to do
But they’ll make a fool of you
And it’s all right, baby it’s all right

We’re on a road to nowhere
We’re on a road to nowhere
We’re on a road to nowhere
We’re on a road to nowhere
